The New Fast
When questioned about why His disciples did not fast, Jesus responded by saying that while He was with them, they were to engage in celebratory activities, for His presence was a cause for joy, not sorrow. He also told parables to emphasize that their behaviour was based upon their newfound belief that He is the Saviour of the world who has come to wash away our sin.
Jesus also taught that there will come a day where He will leave his disciples and, at that time, they will fast. However, His disciples will be participating in a new fast where their reason for fasting will be an expression of their longing for and worship of Jesus.
